As an artilleryman in the Marine Corps, Rapper Shaggy

Shaggy, a Reggae rapper and songwriter who won the Grammy Award in 1988, joined the Marines as an artilleryman.

He was a member of the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina’s 5th Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, also known as” The Five and Dime,” 2nd Marine Division.

Shaggy and his regiment participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, which took place in the Middle East between December 1990 and April 1991, to liberate Kuwait.

After being demoted twice for UA, or unauthorized absence, which was fairly common for Marines of that and earlier eras, he attained the highest rank of lance corporal during his several years in the Marine Corps.

He claimed that the UAs ‘ failure to return to the base in time for morning formation after the weekends was due to driving up to New York City to work on his burgeoning music career during recording sessions. &nbsp,

Shaggy, who is now well-known in the music industry, would, however, remember his enlistment fondly and perform at free military concerts all over the world after being discharged from the Marine Corps in 1992.

Shaggy, who was born on October 22, 1968, in Kingston, Jamaica, as Orville Richard Burrell, did n’t immigrate to America until he was 18 and moved in with his mother in Brooklyn, New York.

He received the rank of Commander and the Jamaican Order of Distinction in 2007. He received an honorary doctorate in fine arts from Brown University in 2022. &nbsp,

Shaggy served in the 5th Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, which engaged in combat in Iraq in 2007 and Afghanistan in 2009–2010. This battalion is known as” The Five and Dime.” In June 2012, the battalion was declared inactive.
