Automated Vehicle Workshop at NIST, September 5, 2023

On September 5–8, 2023, NIST will host a virtual workshop on standards and performance metrics for on-road automated vehicles ( AV ). Online registration and scheduling are both free. The purpose of the workshop is:

  • Join the community of AVs.
  • Give a thorough update on NIST’s most recent efforts.
  • act as a discussion and feedback forum
  • Find out what information NIST can use to best assist stakeholders.

A NIST-wide Automated Vehicles program has been launched to increase capability and aid in the development of measurement science, standards, and performance metrics for this complex and interdisciplinary field. This workshop builds on the work done in 2022 by identifying important challenges and opportunities for the organization. The NIST IR 8442 Workshop Report: Standards and Performance Metrics for On-Road summarizes the workshop’s output for 2022.

These workshops are crucial to the development of automated vehicles, according to NIST and numerous other stakeholders. Key facets of daily life are anticipated to be significantly impacted by on-road AVs. However, if these intricate systems do n’t function as expected, they could endanger safety. In order to help reduce risks to manufacturers and consumers, industry and government organizations are working to develop new measurement science to characterize these systems ‘ performance.
