$3 million worth iPhone were stolen from Apple
After being apprehended and found guilty of submitting more than 5,000 fake iPhones to Apple with the intention of having them replaced with real ones, two Chinese nationals now face 20 years in prison.
Customers can return broken iPhones to Apple or authorized resellers for a replacement under the one-year warranty provided by Apple. Customers can also extend the warranty period by an additional year thanks to Apple’s insurance protection plans.
Under its warranty service and handset replacement program, the company offers a variety of ways to send back damaged iPhones for repairs or replacements.
The phone can be sent to Apple for free via United Parcel Service ( UPS), by going to an Apple retail location, or by visiting an authorized service provider.
Haotian Sun, Pengfei Xue, and their fellow conspirators Wen Jin Gao and Dian Luo used Apple’s policy to replace defective counterfeit devices between July 2017 and December 2019.
According to the indictment,” the conspiracy’s goal was for the conspirators to gain unjustified wealth by defrauding Apple of authentic iPhones after submitting unauthentic ones for repair and replacement.”

They used their actual driver’s licenses and university identification cards to open commercial mail receiving agency ( CMRA ) mailboxes in UPS stores throughout this multi-year scheme.
They then received replacement iPhones from Apple via private and commercial interstate carriers like FedEx, DLH, and UPS after submitting the fake models with spoofed serial numbers and IMEI numbers to Apple retail stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers.
To sell and distribute the funds obtained illegally among the scheme’s participants, these replacement devices were delivered to the conspirators in Hong Kong.
This week, Sun and Xue were found guilty by a jury of conspiracy to commit mail fraud. In December 2019, U.S. postal inspectors detained them.
On June 21, 2024, they will each receive a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
