The National Institute for Standards and Technology ( NIST ) will house the U.S. AI Safety Institute ( AISI), which will be led by key members of the executive leadership team, according to Gina Raimondo, secretary of commerce. Elham Tabassi was chosen by Raimondo to serve as the institute’s chief technology officer, and Elizabeth Kelly as its founding director. In order to support the duties given to the Department of Commerce by the president’s historic Executive Order, President Biden directed the establishment of the U.S. AI Safety Institute under NIST.
The U.S. AI Safety Institute will be well-positioned to develop the measurement science required to promote safe and trustworthy development of AI, according to Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and NIST Director Laurie E. Locascio.
To address the risks and take advantage of AI, the Safety Institute’s ambitious mandate to create guidelines, assess models, and conduct fundamental research will be essential. To advance our understanding of science and promote AI safety, I am thrilled to collaborate with the gifted NIST team and the larger AI community. According to Elizabeth Kelly, the president’s special assistant for economic policy, our top priority will be carrying out the duties given to NIST by the executive order of President Biden.” I look forward to building the institute as a long-term asset for the country and the world.”  ,
The USAISI will support American leadership in developing sustainable AI technologies globally. We need to be well-versed in the technology’s capabilities, limitations, and current and future developments. The science, practice, and policy for AI safety and trustworthiness are being developed by NIST. Elham Tabassi, the NIST’s chief AI advisor, expressed his excitement at being a part of this outstanding team that is leading the effort to create science-based, empirically supported guidelines and standards for AI measurement and policy.
